PEA RIDGE, Ark. -- Shots rang out at 29-year-old Ty Smith’s Pea Ridge home on Wednesday night. Neighbors said they called 911 after hearing the gunfire. Pea Ridge police arrived at the scene. According to a news release, that’s when an officer shot and killed Smith.

“In a little town like this you wouldn’t think this can happen, but it just shows you it can happen anywhere,” said Lillie Burrington, Smith’s neighbor.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the officer involved shooting. The officer, who remains unnamed, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation. Smith’s body has been sent to the stat crime lab for an autopsy.

Neighbors said Smith often fired his gun at his home.
